Java technology development with a robust open source IDE,straight out of the box," said Jeff Jackson, vice president, Java DeveloperPlatform and Strategy, as NetBeans - the foundation for all ofSun's tools products including Java Studio Creator and the Java Studio Enterprise 7 development platform - became available yesterday.
"Sun and the NetBeans community will continue toprovide cutting edge technology for Java developers to create innovativeapplications," Jackson continued.
With this release, all key functionality is included with the initial download of the software, rather than via the addition of a series of plug-ins.
The NetBeans 4.0 IDE includes the following updates:
Tiger Support - J2SE 5.0 language feature support including constructs, such as enums, generics or metadata annotations to build and edit applications without additional setup.
Project System based entirely on Apache Ant - A proven de-facto open source standard build tool for developing applications using Java technologies.
Refactoring features - Technology from the Sun Labs serves as the basis for this feature, which provides simplified code maintenance for developers.
Web application development improvements - Extended support for both J2EE 1.3 and 1.4
Mobility - Expanded support for J2ME, including MIDP 2.0 and CLDC 1.1, including tight integration with the J2ME Wireless Toolkit (WTK) 2.2.
