The Father of Java, Sun Microsystems' Dr. James Gosling, continues to preach the gospel of how this simple programming language, originally designed for set-top boxes, can change the world. Speaking in Brazil earlier in the week, Gosling talked about ubiquitous computing, the state of e-commerce, and Java's role in "Building the Connected World."

Gosling cited figures from The Economist magazine that U.S. consumers will spend more than $120 billion onlnie, marking a full recovery and then some from pre-dot-bomb levels. He segued into Sun's longtime vision of ubiquitous computing, integrating multiple devices that can run anything, anytime, anywhere. In fact, he mentioned "four anywheres," ie, four Java-based technologies that will bring this vision to fruition: J2EE, J2SE, J2ME, and Javacards.

"Java's role (provides) a conceptual framework that spans the network, it enables a homegeneous view of a heterogeneous reality, and it provides end-to-end comprehension and an ecological view," he stated. Java provides the ability to "learn once, work anywhere," he added.

Gosling then went on to tout Java's security, adoption levels and growing community, and collaborative features in outlining his vision, then moved into a discussion of the Java Community Process.

Some big rules:

* "A standard is only as good as its method of validation"

* "Java programmers are not to be lied to"

* "No bureaucracy for bureaucracy's sake"

* "My bytes, my license"

* "Programs don't read licenses"

* "The JCP itself is a JCP standard"

Many of these remarks seemed pointed toward members of the Open Source community who may be chafing under Sun's deviation from original GNU/GPL principles and the company's proclivity to control its technology in a way that is not particularly open to outside of the company. Gosling's presentation then ventured into discursive coverage of the Java Specification Request (JSR) process, as well as the proliferation of Java activities and tools. He also listed a number of Java community websites.

He finished by noting Java's 10th birthday and an exhortation for the audience to join the Java Community Process as the world continues to move toward networks with "massive bandwidth" and software "that is integrated end-to-end."
